FNB Joburg Art Fair – 6 a 9 Setembro
THIS IS NOT THE WHITE CUBE
PRESENTS FOUR ANGOLAN ARTISTS TO THE FNB JOBURG ART FAIR 2018
The Gallery This Is Not The White Cube (TINAWC) will be presented for the first time in the 11th Edition of the FNB Joburg Art Fair, with the exclusive representation of four Angolan artists – Ana Silva, Cristiano Mangovo, Januário Jano and Nelo Teixeira – in which is considered to be the largest international contemporary art exhibition on the African continent, to be held in Johannesburg from 7-9 September 2018 at the Sandton Convention Center, curated by South African Amy Ellenbogen.
In the 2018 edition Angolan artists Ana Silva and Cristiano Mangovo are among the nominees for Africa’s Most Influential New Artistic Talent. Votes are made on the fair’s website and the winner will be announced at the end of the fair.
The FNB Joburg Art Fair is the main art fair on the African continent and plays a crucial role in supporting and promoting contemporary art in Africa and its diaspora. The exhibition is a privileged meeting place for the main international galleries, artists, collectors, thinkers and art lovers, who gather in the event with the aim of reinforcing the dissemination and investment in contemporary African art.
Ana Silva (installation), will present a mixed media installation consisting on 8 ARTWORKS. The artist works through a very intimate journey and the simple observation on daily stories of her context, keeping an interest in social aspects. Her focus is in the use of several materials such as tissues, embroidery, yarn, combining them in a very particular way and using drawing to give a broader sense.
Cristiano Mangovo (painting), his work is multifaceted, ranging from abstract, portrait to impressionism and surrealism, through painting and installation, in which he experiments with new techniques and different materials. In any of these currents or trends, it already has its own unmistakable feature, which distinguishes its style in the context of contemporary Angolan painting. Mangovo will present 3 paintings.
Januario Jano (installation, sculpture) This body of work is part of ongoing project, which the artist focus on recovers typical practices of the Ambundo people from and around Luanda, in a process of historical and personal research that seems to question the visual construction of the collective and private memory in Angola in the last about 40 years. Assuming the political character of the collective and personal memory
of the individual memory they intercept, collide and overlap at different moments.
Nelo Teixeira, will be presenting 4 artworks (mixed media installation) using recycled material in reference to culture and tradition of his country but he is also aware of the new cultural “rhythms” and various social voices. In cities like Luanda incorporating found objects in places as uncertain as scrap, beaches, open spaces, streets, is seen as a source of inspiration and as a raw material simultaneously, which feeds and develops a mere “frame” concept, “desacralizing” the art object.
